Your Questions Answered

1. When should I plant bulbs
All bulbs are different and therefor have there own times for being planted.
You should always check packaging for planting times but as a rule of thumb…
  • Plant spring-flowering bulbs, such as Daffodils, Crocus and Hyacinths, preferably by the end of September
  • Plant Tulips in November
  • Plant hardy summer-flowering bulbs, such as Lilies and Alliums, in September and October
  • Plant tender summer-flowering bulbs, such as Dahlia and Gladioli, in early spring
  • Plant autumn-flowering bulbs, such as Cyclamen and Winter Aconite by late summer

2. Is there a general rule for how deep to plant a bulb?
The basic rule of the thumb is the hole should be at least 3 times as deep as the width of the bulb. If unsure always check the packaging.
It will not harm the bulb if you plant it a little deeper than recommended. It may take the plant a little longer to break the surface but it bulb will have more support and protection against the weather.

3. Problems to watch out for with bulbs.
There aren’t many problems associated with bulbs, apart from checking that the bulbs are healthy to start with (discarding any that are soft or show signs of rot). Pests to look our for include slugs, snails, squirrels (particularly with tulips and crocus) and diseases such as daffodil viruses, grey mould in snowdrops, narcissus basal rot, tulip fire and tulip viruses.

4. When can I sow flower seeds outdoors?
As long as the soil is warm and moist, seeds can be sown and it will germinate quickly. In practice, this usually means either mid-spring to early summer (April-June), or late summer (September). Never sow seeds or leave seedlings outdoors until the risk of frost has passed.
Always refer to the seed packet for the best time to sow, as it does vary with plant type.

5. Why are my seeds not growing?
Seed germination and growth is dependant on many factors.
If the plants are being grown indoors they will need regular watering, and heat sources such as radiators can actually prevent seedlings from germinating.
If plants are being grown outdoors, weather conditions are a major factor into the reason that plants may not grow. Wildlife can also play a big part in why seeds do not germinate. Birds and squirrels dig up seeds unless covered and protected and slugs and snails can devour a whole section of young seedlings in one night.

6. My seeds have grown but there are no flowers, just leaves?
All plant varieties have different growth rates. Some plants can grow quite quickly and develop buds and flowers early in the season. Other varieties such as petunia may yield a mass of greenery and then produce flowers in the later months, whilst others may not flower until their second year of growth.
